Use of nicknames here is common, especially those that would be considered politically incorrect in the states. People just don´t waste energy on worrying about whether a name is offensive or not.

One of the aunt´s in the family is called ¨la negra¨, which roughly translated would be ¨blackie¨ or ¨darkie¨. She is of fair complexion but has black hair.

Our attorney is named ¨Patojo¨ or ¨Limpie¨ as he has a limp. Legend has it that he doesn´t have any toes, that he lost them in a motorcycle accident-but no one really knows. If you go to the beach with him, you´ll never see him without shoes. He´s always wearing a suit and tie but wears funny-looking shoes that look sort of like heavy work boots with a support heel. Maria says they are orthopedic shows.
