I don’t know what is more astonishing-the order Americans manage to keep when the stoplights go out at a busy four way intersection, drivers courteously ceding the right of way to others, one car proceeding in each direction at a time, like some kind of synchronized dance, or the chaos of the same situation in Ecuador.
All cars hurling themselves towards the middle of the intersection, a game of chicken played by dozens of drivers all at the same time, buses and large vehicles usually winning their way through by their mere size. All the cars from every direction inched their way through the intersection, only able to move forward as cars going another direction moved a little bit. Ten minutes of crawling, cars at all sides, to make it 100 or so meters through the crossing, we arrived at the other side unscathed.
